New Zealand: Christchurch Counts the Cost of Repeated Earthquakes

Jul 2, 2011

After three major earthquakes and thousands of aftershocks in the last 10 months, Christchurch is counting the cost, physically and emotionally.

The International Monetary Fund has estimated that the Canterbury earthquake could cost in the region of $15 billion, making it one of the most expensive quakes for global insurers. This has led to a serious problem for the Christchurch City Council.
Christchurch City Council Struggle to Insure City Assets after Earthquakes

Christchurch City Council has been unable to reinsure all of its NZ$4.7 billion of assets. The cover under their previous insurer, Civic Assurance, expired on Thursday 30th June 2011. The Star Newspaper reported on the 1st July that limited cover had been found for over 2000 of the Council’s housing units that were not damaged by the earthquakes. Further insurance was being sought overseas to cover the fragile waste water system, and other assets such as major city venues, libraries and the art gallery. Most insurers and reinsurers have pulled back from offering new policies in the Canterbury region due to the ongoing aftershocks that have the potential to cause further damage.

The Personal Cost of the Christchurch Earthquakes

As the 10 month anniversary of the 4th September earthquake approaches, the people of Christchurch are still experiencing myriad emotions including shock, disbelief and anger. The front page news of The Press on Friday 1st July reported another historic building has been earmarked for urgent demolition and the owner is ‘gutted’. The building was being used as a hotel and although it was in the restricted inner city red zone, burglars and squatters accessed it, causing much damage.

The red zone is still cordoned off and as business owners have been allowed brief access to retrieve belongings, there has been anger and frustration as a number of them have found their premises ransacked by vandals and thieves.

The Red Cross Sets up New Earthquake Grants for Christchurch Residents

As Christchurch temperatures drop and winter frosts set in, the Red Cross has announced that two new assistance packages have been set in place as from the 1st July 2011. The first is aimed at households with school-aged children between ages 5and 18, and those who have a family member with a pre-existing medical condition. The Red Cross will pay their electricity supplier NZ$100 a month for the next four months to enable them to heat their homes properly. The other package is aimed at households with children under 5 years of age and those over 65 who are living in homes that have suffered significant earthquake damage.

The Red Cross has been actively involved in supporting the people of Christchurch throughout the earthquakes and have been a lifesaver to many families and individuals. Along with the Salvation Army, they are highly respected by New Zealanders in general.
