LOCUSTS could arrive in Victoria earlier than expected, with
predictions that spring plagues could be the worst the state has faced
in 75 years.
The Australian Plague Locust Commission has revised projected locust
hatchings by 10 days based on warmer than average spring temperature
forecasts.
"Substantial" hatching levels are now expected to hit northwest
Victoria by September 25 while central and northern regions should
prepare for hatchings in mid-October, Premier John Brumby said.
Incident control centres in towns including Bendigo, Horsham, Mildura,
Swan Hill and Tatura will be staffed by up to 400 people at the height
of the locust threat.
Farmers are being urged to order locust-spraying chemicals early to
ensure manufacturers can meet demand.
A full government rebate is available to farmers in locust-affected
areas for all chemical spray purchases.
"Experts predict we could be facing the worst locust plague in 75
years," Mr Brumby said.
"Farmers, if they haven't already done so, need to be ordering their
chemicals now."
