TEHRAN, Iran -- Iran's seismological center is reporting that a magnitude 5.4-earthquake has jolted a city in the country's south. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The center says the epicenter was near the city of Firouzabad, which is home to 117,000 people. The town is about 620 miles (1,000 kilometers) south of the capital, Tehran. The earthquake struck Friday at 4:03 p.m. local time (1233 GMT).

The U.S. Geological Survey put the magnitude at 5.6.

Quakes measuring more than a magnitude of 5 can cause considerable damage.

Iran is located on seismic fault lines and on average experiences at least one small earthquake a day.

A magnitude-6.6 quake flattened the historic southeastern city of Bam in 2003, killing 26,000 people.
