Argentina: Strong Earthquake Strikes San Juan

CORAL GABLES (LALATE) – A strong Argentina earthquake today struck
San Juan. The terremoto today January 18, 2012 could be felt in
Mendoza, Argentina and the region east of Santiago, Chile. No
reports of injuries have yet to be detailed by local news.
A strong 5.0 magnitude earthquake today struck Argentina, local
news indicates. The quake struck after 8 am local time. USGS
reports to news that the quake had a nominal depth. Striking at
only four miles below the earth’s surface, the quake could be felt
across a wide cross section.
Local news reports the quake was centered closest to San Juan,
Argentina. The quake was roughly thirty miles east of town. The
quake was also eighty-eight miles west of La Rioja. It was
centered ninety-three miles north of Mendoza and six hundred miles
west of Buenos Aires.
No reports of damage have been detailed by local news. The quake
was north east of Santiago Chile, and directly east of Salamanca,
Chile and Canela.
The quake was centered just outside the edges of the San Juan,
Argentina region. Local news put the quake north of the 141
highway.
In October, Argentina suffered a 6.2 magnitude temblor, one of the
strongest earthquakes to strike the country that year. The quake
was centered sixty-five miles east of San Salvador de Jujuy and
roughly eighty miles outside El Quebrachal.
In September last year, a 6.7 magnitude quake made news, striking
west of Anatuya, Santiago del Estero. Months earlier, the Tucuman
region of Argentina dominated new after suffering a 5.3 magnitude
terremoto as well.
