Strong Earthquake shakes Azores Islands*

LISBON, Portugal — A magnitude-6 earthquake has struck near the Azores
Islands, the nearest land to the epicenter.
The National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colorado, says the
temblor occurred 444 kilometres (276 miles) southwest of the Portuguese
islands.
It struck at 6:41 p.m. (1941 GMT) Wednesday and was 10 kilometres (6
miles) below the surface of the ocean.
A magnitude-6 quake can cause severe damage.
