Strong Storms Sweep Through US Mid-Atlantic Region

Severe thunderstorms hit the Atlantic Coast from the Carolinas to Maine overnight, leaving buildings destroyed and thousands without power.

The fast-moving thunderstorms blew through the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast early Tuesday and knocked out electricity to more than 82,000 people.

Winds up to 80 mph left some residents homeless, stripping the siding off of homes and collapsing porch roofs.

In New Jersey, gusting winds of 55mph overturned two small planes at the Trenton-Mercer Airport and damaged at least five others, N.J. Mercer County spokeswoman Julie Willmot said.

The National Weather Service sent surveyors to Maryland to determine if a tornado had touched down.

No injuries were reported in the storms, but some officials estimate cleanup could take months.
