Schools are shut and travellers face air, rail and road delays as a band
of snow and icy weather sweeps Britain.
Up to 100mm snow is forecast in some parts of the country on Tuesday as
the bad weather moves south.
Many schools are closed in Scotland, and train services between London
and the north are disrupted.
Snow shut the runway at Manchester Airport in northwest England
overnight, and budget carrier easyJet cancelled several flights from
London's Luton airport.
This winter has been the coldest for years, driving a surge in demand
for heating fuel. Authorities on Monday urged power suppliers to switch
temporarily from gas to other fuels such as coal. The measure, known as
a gas balancing alert, has only been used once before, in March 2006.
