Great Earthquakes In Diverse Places
Three earthquakes shook things up in Nevada
July 20, 2010
Three earthquakes of magnitudes 2, 4.2 and 1.9 shook things up in
Pyramid Lake Tuesday afternoon, experts said.
The quakes were relatively small, and no structural damage was
reported, said Tom Rennie, seismic analyst at the University of Nevada,
Reno.
The first quake, a magnitude 2 foreshock, occurred at 10:37 a.m. and
was followed by the 4.2 at 2:48 p.m. and an aftershock 1.9 at 2:53
p.m., according the University of Nevada Seismological Laboratory.
Tremors were felt as far south as the university. One report said, “It
was enough to sway some of our computer hardware about a half an inch,”
according to Rennie.
Because Pyramid Lake has a known fault and the surrounding area is
prone to earthquakes, Rennie said people should be cautious.
“Look around the environment you’re in and try to mitigate any
potential hazards,” he said. “Make sure when you’re sleeping there’s
nothing that will fall on you.”
