A magnitude 6.3 quake has struck off Alaska's Aleutian Islands, the
second earthquake in less than 24 hours, the US Geological Survey reported.
The most recent quake happened at 9.20am on Wednesday morning, New
Zealand time, and was shallow at a depth of 14km under the seabed, and
centred 120km southeast of Nikolski.
The Pacific Tsunami Centre said the quake did not trigger a tsunami.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
It followed a 6.2 magnitude earthquake which struck the islands late on
Monday, local time.
The area is prone to quakes but 6.3 is greater than most temblors
affecting the Aleutians, a chain of about 300 small islands.
Meanwhile, quakes have continued to rock the area around Vanuatu, where
a 7.8 earthquake last week triggered tsunami warnings across the
Pacific, including New Zealand.
The latest was a 5.2 quake off Vanuatu at around 9.48am on Wednesday
morning, New Zealand time.
A 6.0 magnitude quake also hit the sea off Halmahera, Indonesia at
12.38am on Wednesday morning New Zealand time, at a depth of 32 km.
