SANTIAGO (Reuters) - A moderate earthquake of 5.6 magnitude hit
central Chile Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported, but
the country’s state emergency office Onemi said there were no
signs of damage.
USGS initially said the magnitude was 5.8. The epicenter of the
quake was 57 miles south-southwest of the city of Concepcion at a
depth of 8.5 miles.
In February 2010, central Chile was hit by a massive quake of 8.8
magnitude and ensuing tsunamis that caused widespread devastation
and killed hundreds of people.
