BELGRADE, Serbia -- Authorities say more than 4,000 houses have been
reported damaged or destroyed in an earthquake this week in Serbia that
killed two people and injured dozens.
Police official Predrag Maric says 22 elderly people have been moved to
a municipal center while many people have sought temporary housing with
friends and neighbors.
Maric said Thursday that experts will assess the damage before
reconstruction work can start in and around the central town of
Kraljevo.
The 5.3-magnitude earthquake hit the area early Wednesday, sending
people fleeing from their homes in panic. The tremor was felt
throughout the country.
Authorities say schools in Kraljevo remain closed Thursday. There still
is no drinking water but electricity has been mostly restored.
