A series of
shootings this weekend has Chicagoans on edge.
A total of 11 separate
shootings since Friday night have resulted in seven deaths and
at least 30 injuries in the Windy City. The victims range in
age from 16-years old to 40-years-old, according to multiple
media reports.
The last of the shooting
deaths came early Sunday morning when police chased a man down
a dark alley on the crime-ridden West Side. The suspect jumped
out of the window of a moving car the officers were attempting
to pull over, he fell down fleeing officers and pulled out a
9mm handgun, reported the Chicago Tribune. Officers shot the
suspect in self-defense, he was pronounced dead on the scene
at 4:11am, the
paper reported.
Also on the West Side, a 31-year old man was shot to death Sunday at about 1:30am, according to NBC Chicago. Only minutes earlier, at 1:13am, a 19-year-old man was found shot in the chest, stomach and shoulder, according to the station. He was later pronounced dead about an hour later at a local hospital.
The worst incident of the violent weekend occurred just after midnight. Four people were shot inside a nightclub on the gritty South Side after an altercation outside. The shooter is alleged to have burst through the front door to the club and opened fire, according to authorities. A 40-year-old man died after being shot in the back during the attack, DNAinfo reported.
Just before midnight Saturday, a 16-year-old boy was killed in a drive-by shooting on the northwest side while walking down an alley. Police allege the child was shot in the left arm and back by a gunman riding a bike. Desperate for help, the victim stumbled down the street before collapsing and later being pronounced dead at a hospital.
An hour earlier, in the same neighborhood police acting in self-defense later shot to death a fleeing suspect, three people were shot, one fatally. The deceased was a 21-year-old male shot in the forehead, cheek and calf, he was was pronounced dead on the scene, DNAinfo reported.
The first shooting death of the weekend occurred on the South Side when a 24-year-old man was shot in the eye. He was walking with a group of people when another group of people opened fire on them, according to the Tribune.
Of the more serious injuries, a 34-year-old man somehow survived being shot in the head, back and leg about 4:10am Sunday, according to NBC Chicago. Taken to the hospital by a friend, the man refused to cooperate with authorities.
Another man was shot in the arm
during a carjacking attempt at about 6:10am Saturday on the
South Side, reported NBC Chicago. No further details were
provided.
A 23-year-old gang member was injured in a drive by shooting
around 10:40pm Friday when a car pulled up and a passenger
fired multiple shots into the man, hitting him in the
buttocks, according to NBC Chicago. His injuries are not life
threatening.
