ACAPULCO, Mexico -- Hurricane Rick was swiftly strengthening Friday off
Mexico's Pacific coast with winds near 85 mph (140 kph), and forecasters
said it could soon become a major hurricane.
Rick was centered about 270 miles (435 kilometers) south of Acapulco,
Mexico, and was moving west near 9 mph (15 kph) Friday afternoon, the
U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said.
Acapulco's Civil Protection Department issued a warning that rains are
expected and could trigger landslides and flooding in the resort city.
Rick was expected to travel parallel to the coast of Mexico over the
next five days.
