Bridges destroyed, homes flooded in Romania*
BUCHAREST, Aug 7 (AFP) Aug 07, 2007
After a deadly weeks-long heatwave, Romania was deluged Tuesday by
strong rains that flooded hundreds of homes and swept away several
bridges, officials said.
The worst-affected region was Constanta in the southeast where the rains
were particularly bad and flooded some 200 houses in two villages.
The authorities had to use a row boat to rescue one man who was stranded
in fast-rising floodwaters, while dozens of police and fire service
personnel were deployed to try and limit the destruction.
Three people from the same area, a couple and their child, were killed
on Monday evening when a tree fell on their car during a storm.
More than 100 homes were also flooded in the northeastern region of
Suceava where several bridges were carried away by the floods.
Numerous electricity cuts were also registered.
