Australia: Abalone virus spreads to wild stocks

A VIRUS which shut down production at a Tasmanian abalone farm has
been detected in the wild, the state government says.
Production at an abalone farm at Bicheno, on the state's east
coast, and a processing plant at Margate, south of Hobart, when
cases of abalone viral ganglioneuritis (AVG) were found last
Friday.
The farm had to destroy $2.5 million worth of stock.
Primary Industries Minister Bryan Green confirmed today there was
"a low level of positive results" among samples taken in the wild.
But he said the results only confirmed presence of the virus, and
not the resulting disease.
"More test results are pending and we are awaiting the
histopathology test results on those same samples to provide an
indication about any signs of the disease," Mr Green said.
"While the test results are significant, more works needs to be
done, and is being done, to determine if there is or is not
disease in the wild."
The disease, which is harmless to humans but fatal to the
shellfish, was responsible for severely depleting Victoria's wild
abalone in 2006.
