Europe prepares for massive floods as thaw sets in

BERLIN — Europe stood by for floods and riverbank communities
erected mobile levees on Friday as a mass of snow melted amid
rising temperatures after a month-long chill.
Along the Moselle River in Germany, riverside streets in several
small towns were under water and emergency services brought
aluminum flood walls and boardwalks out of storage for the coming
inundation.
In nearby Belgium, rivers also broke their banks.
At Koblenz, Germany, the city where the Moselle flows into the
Rhine, officials said they feared the combined high water of both
rivers might create the city's worst flood in 10 years.
Forecasters said western Europe's snow cover was likely to melt
fast with several days of steady rain coming up.
