FAMILIES have been told to evacuate as bushfires approach north Perth
in Western Australia.
The Fire Emergency Services of WA has issued a warning for people living
in the shire of Dandaragan, 54km north of Perth, which has an estimated
population of 2883.
The bushfire started in the Marchagee Track area near Mazza Road at
about 11am local time (2:00 AEDT) and is moving fast in a south east
direction.
Flames are reportedly higher than roof tops.
More than 100 volunteer firefighters and farm units were on the scene,
the FESA website said.
People living north of Watharoo Road, between the Brand Highway and
Coloara Road were being asked to evacuate to the Badgingarra Recreation
Centre.
The hot and dry weather conditions, which authorities say are the worst
Western Australia has experienced in five years, increase the risk of
fires burning out of control.
Western Australia is the third Australian state to be put on bushfire
alert after high temperatures in South Australia and Victoria last week
threatened to spark fires.
Earlier this year Victoria was devastated by the Black Saturday
bushfires, which claimed the lives of nearly 200 people.
