A RARE flesh-eating bug killed a Hong Kong man in the second reported
case of the illness in the region in just two months, its health
department said today.
The 48-year-old tested positive after his death on September 10 for a
type of flesh-eating bug called necrotizing fasciitis, which can enter
the skin through the tiniest cut before releasing flesh and
muscle-destroying toxins.
The man suffered injuries to both calves in July and was hospitalised
on September 8 with leg pain and shortness of breath, Hong Kong's
Department for Health's Centre for Health Protection said in a
statement.
After going into shock, he had surgery to remove contaminated flesh,
but "his condition deteriorated, and he passed away on September10,"
the department said.
Lab tests showed flesh-eating bugs in his body. The case was referred
to the coroner.
The man's death followed a case in August in which a 68-year-old Hong
Kong woman was left fighting for her life after she hurt her finger
while handling a fish and contracted an infection with the same
bacteria.
The bug devoured her left hand and ravaged her right leg, the health
department said.
There are just 0.4 cases of flesh-eating bug disease per 100,000 people
worldwide annually.
Quick treatment with antibiotics is the only known cure.
