EDMONTON - An official with the RCMP in Edmonton says a veteran officer
arrested after his wife was found dead had his service weapon at home
because his job required it.
An agency that investigates incidents involving police says the
36-year-old constable was arrested around 5:30 a.m. and his wife's body
was discovered inside a home in a neighbourhood in the city's southeast.
Peter Hourihan, an assistant commissioner with the RCMP, says the
constable was not on duty at the time he was arrested.
An official with the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team says police
were called to the home sometime after 4 a.m. to a report of shots
being fired, though the agency wouldn't comment on how the woman may
have died.
Hourihan says the officer, who had over seven years experience, worked
as a traffic enforcement officer at an Edmonton-area detachment.
He says the force is "deeply saddened" by this incident, adding that
there are employee assistance programs in place to help police officers
cope with personal difficulties.
