Australia: Massive and Intense Storms slam NSW

November 9, 2010

NSW is braced for the second of a mammoth four-day storm extravaganza, weatherzone.com.au says.

Storms delivered damaging winds, large hail and flash flooding to the east of the state on Monday, Martin Palmer, a meteorologist at weatherzone.com.au, said.

The light show over Sydney was particularly wild and its severity caused delays at the airport.

In all, 900 lightning bolts ripped into the Sydney Basin and across the state 51,000 cloud-to-ground strikes were recorded.

On Tuesday, the electrical fireworks got under way again from mid-afternoon with pockets of storms forming along the ranges and north west slopes and plains.

The trough that brought the sparky end to Monday is moving very slowly. As a result swarms of thunderstorms are rattling into broadly the same areas that they did on Monday.

The trough has edged a little north and should give most areas west of a line from Canberra to Bourke a respite.

For Tuesday, hail, damaging wind gusts and flash flooding will continue to be a threat for the storm-hit areas.

The trough is hanging on though, with more storm days to come.

Wednesday will see the focus shift back to the central coast and on Thursday it will be the north-east of the state, before the trough finally weakens and dies.
