THREE people were killed and four injured today in what police called a
domestic violence workplace incident in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Earlier today, police said six people had been killed, but Albuquerque
Police Chief Ray Schultz later confirmed there were fewer victims than
initially thought due to what he described as a "chaotic scene".
Chief Schultz confirmed the male gunman was among the dead, but he has
not yet been identified.
Four victims were transported to University Hospital at the University
of New Mexico where two were in guarded condition and two were in
stable condition, Chief Schultz said.
A number of employees were also taken to the hospital with "different
types of distress", but without physical injuries.
The 37-year-old-gunman opened fire with a handgun at the Emcore Fibre
Optics facility shortly before 9.30am local time.
Police believe the gunman was the boyfriend of one of the victims, and
the couple has children together. The children have been placed in
protective custody, police said.
Officers from New Mexico state police, the FBI, Albuquerque police and
the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department all responded to the
incident.
Police said 80 people were inside the building at the time of the
shooting.
The neighbourhood was placed on lockdown after early reports of a
second shooter.
Emcore manufactures components of fibre optics and solar panels. The
facility is located near the Kirtland Air Force Base.
