Dozens of people were killed and scores injured in a series of bomb attacks across Iraq on Wednesday, less than a week before the end of US combat operations.

A suicide car bomber killed at least 26 people and wounded 87 in an attack on a police station in the southern city of Kut.

The attack followed a series of explosions around the country, including one in the Iraqi capital, where a suicide lorry bomber killed at least 15 people and wounded 58 in another attack on a police station. The Iraqi capital was also hit by four other bombs on Wednesday, all of which left two dead and nearly 20 injured.

The cities of Kirkuk, Basra, Ramadi and Karbala were also hit by explosions on Wednesday,.

There were no claims of responsibility, but the scale and reach of the violence, which comes a day after the number of US troops fell below 50,000, underscored insurgent efforts to show their might as the American military presence in Iraq shrinks.

While violence has subsided significantly since the height of the sectarian bloodshed in 2006 and 2007, militants continue to target members of Iraq's nascent security forces, undermining their ability to defend the country as the US ends combat operations in the country.

In addition to daily attacks on Iraq's police and army, the number of criminal attacks has also grown in the past weeks.
