Babies die after contaminated drip enters bloodstream

TWO babies were killed and five were left critically ill after they were poisoned by a contaminated drip at a German hospital.
The children were fed the bacteria-infested solution at the University Medical Centre in Mainz, western Germany, several days ago, Sky News reported.
German prosecutors are investigating the deaths and are considering charges of involuntary manslaughter and "bodily injury."
Local media reports said that one of the five surviving babies remains critically ill and is not expected to live. The other four infants are in a stable condition, according to reports.
It was not clear whether the solution was contaminated at the hospital or earlier.
"We are shocked by these events and we express our profound condolences to the parents and close relatives of the dead children," said Norbert Pfeiffer, the director of the facility.
Bacteria was confirmed in the feeding drip by the medical center's microbiology section.
"The competent authorities have been informed and research into the chain of production for the exact cause" of the contamination is underway, Mr Pfeiffer said.
