(AFP) - Torrential rain lashing southern Spain caused flooding that
blocked dozens of roads and forced the evacuation of some 3,000 people,
local authorities said Tuesday.
Spanish media said a 31-year-old man was killed when he was struck by
lightning in a farmhouse in the southern town of Arroyo del Ojanco, in
the Andalucia region, during a storm.
A nine-year-old girl is also missing after the car she was in was swept
away by floodwaters in the south-central town of Almodovar del Campo in
the Castilla-La Mancha region, the media said. Her parents were able to
escape from the vehicle.
About 30 percent of the historic center of the Andalucian town of Ecija
was under some six feet (two meters) of water after the river Genil
burst its banks.
The regional government said the flooding forced emergency services to
evacuate some 3,000 people in the town on Tuesday. Dozens of homes were
also evacuated and many main roads were blocked in other parts of
Andalucia.
Heavy rains and strong winds have lashed Spain and Portugal since
Saturday. The bad weather is expected to continue until Wednesday and
several provinces in Andalucia remain on high alert.
