40 dead as truck falls into pond

AT least 40 people have been killed after a truck overturned and fell into a roadside pond in India's north.
Senior police official Brij Lal says the truck was carrying pilgrims travelling to a local temple on Monday in Ballia district in Uttar Pradesh state.
He says at least 12 people were injured in the accident with the truck carrying more than 60 passengers.
Lal says most of the deaths were due to drowning.
Ballia district is about 300 kms southeast of the state capital, Lucknow.
