6.2 Earthquake Shakes Indonesia's West Papua*

A 6.2 earthquake shook Manokwari in Indonesia’s West Papua on Thursday
just after midnight. The quake did not have tsunami potential.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency stated on its website
that the epicenter was 26 km deep and was located 78 km northwest of
Manokwari.

Metro TV reported local residents ran out of their houses upon feeling
the tremor at 12:18 a.m. A hotel in Manokwari evacuated their guests
outside but the hotel guests refused to return to their rooms afterwards
for fear of an aftershock. They sat in the lobby and parking area for a
few hours.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage from the quake.

The tremor in Manokwari was the second quake to shake Indonesia in less
than 12 hours. The first quake took place at Melonguane, North Sulawesi,
on Wednesday at 2:55 p.m. The 5.0 quake was located 11 km southeast of
Melonguane and the epicenter was 10 km deep.
