Canada: Norovirus outbreak shuts down Nanaimo hospital
Daily News December 30, 2010
Visitor restrictions and shut downs are now in place at the
Nanaimo Regional General Hospital due to the latest outbreak of
Norovirus infections at the facility.
Visitors to NRGH, as well as Victoria General Hospital, also
experiencing an outbreak, are now limited to two per patient
during visiting hours.
Visitors should not visit the hospital if feeling sick and all
visitors and encouraged to follow health precautions and maintain
strict hand hygiene, states a news release from the Vancouver
Island Health Authority.
The last Norovirus outbreak at NRGH was in early May and the
facility immediately implemented restrictions on visitors. The
virus infected 36 patients and several staff members until it the
outbreak wound down and the visitor restrictions were rescinded on
June 1.
Winter is the peak time of year for Norovirus, a mild but highly
infectious vomiting and diarrhea illness that can spread rapidly
through families and institutions, especially during the holiday
season with its many social gatherings.
Symptoms of a Norovirus infection can include vomiting, diarrhea,
abdominal pain, headache, body aches, and sometimes fever. People
typically become ill 24 to 48 hours after exposure to the virus,
and symptoms usually last one to two days.
Prevention is straightforward: wash your hands properly with soap
and water, prepare and handle food with the utmost of care, and if
you are ill, stay home and don't prepare food for others until 48
hours after your last symptoms.
