Strong magnitude-6.5 earthquake hits Solomon Islands

PALMER, Alaska � The Alaska Tsunami Warning Center reports a
strong earthquake has occurred near the Solomon Islands, but there
is no risk of a tsunami on the West Coast.
The earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.5. It occurred
Tuesday at 12:20 a.m. PST, about 46 miles west of Kira Kira,
Solomon Islands.
The warning center at Palmer, Alaska, says that based on historic
tsunami records and on the quake's magnitude and location, a
damaging tsunami is not expected in Alaska or anywhere along the
West Coast. No warning, watch or advisory is in effect.
