At least 341 people were forced to abandon their properties and
dozens of homes were destroyed when the severe weather struck on
Tuesday night.
Government officials today said 53 buildings had been damaged and
several were completely demolished during the freak storm, which
blasted across a rural area near the town of Nkomazi close to the
country's famous Kruger National Park.
Simphiw Kunene, a local government spokesman, said the storm was
"unbelievably powerful and freakish".
"Luckily nobody was injured or killed. But sadly for those who
live there, much of the area has been destroyed," he said.
"The hail stones must have been enormous as some buildings were
completely demolished."
Officials were today visiting the scene of the disaster, which
happened around 300 miles from Johannesburg in South Africa's
eastern Mpumalanga province.
Some of the homeless had been provided with emergency tents and
blankets after being forced to abandoned their shattered houses
following the storm, which struck at around 9pm on Tuesday.
