JERUSALEM -- Israel is beginning a five-day civil defense drill to test
the response of soldiers, emergency crews and civilians to a wide array
of simulated attacks.
This fourth annual home front drill is the biggest Israel has ever
conducted.
It comes at a time when Iranian-backed militants are rearming to
Israel's north and south and Iran itself is suspected of developing
nuclear arms, despite its assertions to the contrary.
The exercise has raised regional suspicions that Israel is preparing
for war.
Defense officials say Israel has tried to allay those fears with
messages to Arab states.
Israel began carrying out the annual exercise after its 2006 war with
Hezbollah militants in Lebanon showed the home front was unprepared.
