An aspiring horror writer who practised Satanism and witchcraft and was
working on a book called Cannibalistic Instincts has been accused of
frying and eating parts of his girlfriend after strangling and
dismembering her.
When Alejandra Galeana, 32, went missing in Mexico City two weeks ago,
her worried family contacted the authorities and suggested her lover
could be to blame.
Police burst into the home of Jose Luis Calva and discovered a gruesome
scene: a dining table set with cutlery and a plate of newly fried human
flesh. A leg was found in the refrigerator while human bones were
stashed in a cereal box.
The mutilated remains of Miss Galeana, 32, were in a bedroom closet,
said Gustavo Salas, Mexico City's chief homicide prosecutor.
Dr. Rodolfo Rojo, chief medical examiner for Mexico City's prosecutor's
office, said muscle found on the plate and in the frying pan
corresponded to parts missing from the body of Miss Galeana.
Authorities also found a cut up lime beside the flesh, leading them to
believe Calva used the fruit as seasoning, Dr Rojo said. And they
suspect Calva had already sampled some of the flesh.
"It is totally justified to assume he ate human meat," said Mr Salas.
Calva, who attempted to flee and was injured falling from his balcony,
is being held in hospital.
Prosecutors also suspect him of strangling and mutilating two other
women whose dismembered bodies were found crammed in cardboard boxes and
suitcases in Mexico City in 2004 and 2007.
One of the bodies, found in April, was missing its hands and feet.
The other, found in 2004, was that of Calva's former girlfriend,
Veronica Martinez, who had lived with him before her death.
The 40-year-old would-be writer produced volumes of poetry and police
found a copy of an unfinished manuscript entitled Cannibalistic
Instincts among his possessions.
Its cover had a masked image of Silence of the Lambs killer Hannibal
Lecter altered to resemble Calva's face.
Police also found books on black magic and copies of the Hannibal Lecter
films.
One former girlfriend told police Calva was a jealous, possessive lover
who believed in witchcraft and practiced disturbing rituals.
He is expected to face charges carrying a sentence of up to 50 years in
jail.
