Australian Residents warned of another mosquito-borne disease epidemic

RESIDENTS in central Victoria are being warned to protect themselves against mosquito bites after new detections of Murray Valley encephalitis virus (MVEv) in sentinel chickens.

Victoria's chief health officer Dr John Carnie said the disease has been detected in sentinel chickens at Cobram, Rutherglen, Toolamba and Bendigo.

This followed last month's scare in similar areas including Barmah, Kerang and Tooleybuc, where evidence of the virus is again present.

There have been no confirmed cases of MVEv in humans, but symptoms include severe headache, high fever, drowsiness, tremor and seizures and people experiencing such symptoms have been warned to seek urgent medical attention.

Flocks of chickens are placed at locations throughout the Murray River region to act as an early warning system for possible human infections with MVEv.

Dr Carnie said simple precautions could help protect against mosquitoes, which were at their most active at dawn and dusk.

"However, with the extensive flood waters in and around a number of towns mosquitoes are presently being seen throughout the day," Dr Carnie said.

To reduce the chances of being bitten, he said people in mosquito-prone areas should cover up by wearing long, loose-fitting clothing and use insect repellants containing picaridin or DEET.

Water containers also should be emptied at least once a week to break the mosquitoes' 10-day breeding cycle.
