Wednesday night update: A reported 4.7-magnitude earthquake in
Plumas County, Calif. shook parts of the region late Wednesday
night, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
The quake was recorded at 11:37 p.m. about 35 miles west of Reno
in northern California, the government reported. The USGS
initially estimated the quake at 5.2 but later placed it at
4.7-magnitude after the information had been reviewed by a
seismologist.
The Plumas County Sheriff's Office said that it has received no
reports of damage or injuries.
A deputy was headed to area of the quake to check for damage. Some
summer homes are in that area, which the sheriff's office
estimates is about 20 miles east of Quincy, Calif.
The sheriff's office received several calls asking about the
earthquake, but none of the callers reported any problems. They
were seeking information on the quake.
Mike Markus, who works at the Shell Oil station in Truckee, said
he was reading when he felt a jolt from the quake that was an
estimated 23 miles northwest of Truckee.
"It was just enough to get your attention," he said. "By the time
it got your attention, it stopped."
"It kind of rattled the windows a little bit," Markus said. "It
rattled for maybe 1 to 2 seconds, and then it just stopped right
away."
He added that no damage occurred at the business or nearby.
The USGS said early today that the earthquake was:
- 9 miles south-southeast of Whitehawk, Calif.
- 11 miles south-southeast of Valley Ranch, Calif. and Clio,
Calif.
- 90 miles northeast of Sacramento, Calif.
The earthquake's depth was estimated at 8.5 miles.
