AROUND 1000 people in central-west NSW are being evacuated due to
rising flood waters from unseasonably wet summer weather.
Residents in low-lying areas of Coonamble are being ordered to evacuate
their homes and businesses on this morning (AEDT).
The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) are doorknocking affected
residents and issuing the order via its emergency alert system.
"The rain is still falling up there and the ground is very, very wet,"
SES spokesman Dave Owen said today.
Major flooding is expected at Coonamble as the Castlereagh River
continues to rise.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) expects river levels to reach 5.4m by
tonight, resulting in major flooding.
Minor to moderate flood warnings have been issued for the Lachlan,
Murrumbidgee, Paroo, Belubula and Hastings Rivers.
SES volunteers have undertaken 11 flood rescues and have received about
400 requests for assistance across NSW since yesterday.
Heavy rains blanketed Sydney yesterday, making it the wettest start to
summer in 60 years.
More rain is forecast for Sydney and parts of NSW today.
