Thousands of hectares of ancient woodland have been destroyed in
a fire in the Spanish autonomous community of Galacia.
The forest fire, has caused widespread destruction in the Natural
Park of Eume.
This natural park, covering an area of 9,000 hectares on the
north-west coast of Spain, boasts "wildwood" dating back hundreds
of years.
The fire has destroyed around 500 hectares of trees and a further
250 hectares of scrubland.
Many areas of Spain have been hit hard by continuing drought
conditions, making the forested areas susceptible to wildfires.
A total of 224 troops from Spain's Military Emergency Unit, backed
by five helicopters and for fire-fighting aircraft, worked
throughout the day trying to bring the flames under control and
establishing a perimeter to the fire late on Sunday.
Meanwhile, 200 people had to be evacuated from their homes in
several nearby villages.
Spain has experienced its driest winter in 70 years and although
some rain is forecast for the coming week, experts are predicting
a high risk of further fires throughout the spring and summer.
