NEARLY 6000 dead birds and hundreds of dead sea turtles have been
collected by the US Fish and Wildlife Service across five states since
the Gulf of Mexico BP oil spill on April 20.
According to the government authority’s consolidated Thursday (local
time) report, a total 5951 dead birds, 585 sea turtles and 92 mammals -
including dolphins - have been collected since the disaster.
For the first time, the service has also started breaking down the
species of oiled birds collected, alive and dead, from last Tuesday.
The largest species of dead birds are laughing gulls (1591), brown
pelicans (376) and northern gannets (182).
There have also been 2071 live birds collected, 528 sea turtles and
nine mammals. Live birds are taken to rehabilitation centers where oil
is removed and the birds released again.
The figures come as National Incident Commander Thad Allen confirmed
that a relief well had intersected BP's blown out well.
The April 20 explosion off the coast of Louisiana killed 11 people and
released nearly five million barrels of crude oil into the Gulf.
