A STRONG 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck the southern Atlantic Ocean
today near the South Sandwich Islands, a sparsely populated British
territory, the US Geological Survey reported.
The quake struck at 0524 GMT (1624 AEDT) some 85km east of Visokoi
Island, South Sandwich Islands, or 3480km southeast of Buenos Aires,
Argentina.
The US agency said the quake was at a depth of 17.3km.
The islands, along with nearby South Georgia, serve mainly as a base
for British scientific missions to Antarctica.
