Lightning strikes, severe storms cause travel chaos in
London
By Kev Hedges.
Freak summer storms have hit many parts of the south eastern
region of the UK causing travel disruption. The control tower at
Gatwick Airport was hit around 1400BST (0900EDT) and inevitably
flights have been delayed.
The lightning strikes have also hit the signalling on the main
Kings Cross line heading north. Buses have now replaced trains
going out of London heading north. There is also flash flooding as
heavy rains have fallen on recently sun-baked terrain following
two-day heatwave which saw temperatures pass 31c (88f).
A House just behind mine got struck by lightning about an hour
and a half ago.Internet's back,I've just about stopped
shaking.Looked up,outa the window, and right in front of my
face,about 150ft away(and remember,this next bit happens in a
fraction of a second)...Massive strike,real pokey one.Most
lightning don't get much past the diameter of your wrist,It's the
current that fries the air,how many amps it has packed into it!
In Crawley, Sussex, fire teams are dealing with a house fire
caused by a lightning strike. There have also been signals struck
on the rail link between London Victoria Station and the Gatwick
Airport.
The tennis finals at Wimbledon were also affected with only the
recently-built centre court, with its roof, seeing any action.
There Sabine Lisicki beat Marion Bartoli 6-4 6-7 (4-7) 6-1 while
tennis fans could hear torrential rain on the glass roof and a
thunder and lightning display outside.
The powerful storms are expected to last another six hours before
heading out into the North Sea.
