TWO workers were missing and more than 30 others were trapped on an oil
rig off China's northeast coast after the platform leaned dramatically,
state media said today.
Rescue teams have been sent to the Shengli oil field off Dongying in
Shandong province, where the incident took place late yesterday,
stranding 34 people on the platform in the East China Sea, the Xinhua
news agency reported.
Helicopters were searching for the two people who slipped from the
platform, now leaning at a 45-degree angle, but strong winds kept
rescue boats from docking at the rig to retrieve those trapped, the
agency said.
The Shengli oil field, the second-largest in China, is operated by
Sinopec, the biggest oil refiner in Asia.
The rig's valve has been shut down and those on the platform are safe,
the report quoted the oil field management office as saying.
Xinhua did not say whether any oil had been spilled in the incident.
