64 buildings destroyed as More firefighters head to Raging Washington State wildfire

GOLDENDALE, Wash. (AP) – Fire officials said more firefighters are joining the more than 550 already battling a wildfire in the tinder-dry forests near Washington state's Satus Pass.

Sister Ephraimia, a Greek Orthodox nun, shovels dirt onto small flames Thursday near Goldendale, Wash. The sister and other nuns are helping firefighters battle a wildfire that has threatened their monastery.

Fire incident spokesman Dale Warriner said the fire is holding at about 4,200 acres with crews containing about 20 percent of it.

The blaze has so far burned 64 buildings and homes.

Warriner says crews will spend Saturday protecting structures and working on containment. They will be joined by helicopters.

The weather is forecast to continue to be dry and hot over the weekend.

The fire started Wednesday along U.S. Highway 97 across the street from a Greek Orthodox monastery. The highway was reopened Saturday.
