Forest fires rage in Honduras, delay flights

Tegucigalpa (AFP) April 27, 2011 - Forest fires raging in Honduras sent a thick layer of smoke across much of the capital on Wednesday, delaying international flights, officials said.

Even early it seemed like sundown with smoke blanketing the hills near the Central American nation's capital Tegucigalpa.

The smoke ends up not circulating much due to the mountains, national weather service forecaster Oscar Lagos explained.

"So far the worst affected have been the airlines," he said.

The fires, which have destroyed more than 50,000 hectares (130,00 acres) of land, have been affecting visibility at Toncontin international airport near the capital for weeks.
