A WILDFIRE in Gold Hill, Colorado, grew to 5000 acres and forced
emergency crews to order residents to evacuate about 200 homes today.
No injuries were reported, the Daily Camera said.
The blaze started shortly after 10am local time. It burned several
buildings and destroyed a fire truck. The Boulder Office of Emergency
Management said another 100 structures were threatened.
Speaking at a press briefing, Boulder County Sheriff's Office spokesman
Commander Rick Brough said 35 agencies, including the US Forest Service
and the Colorado State Fire Service, were working to combat the fire.
The Red Cross was brought in to assist with evacuations throughout the
evening, Commander Brough said.
Evacuation centres were set up at the North Boulder Recreation Center
and the Nederland Town Centre. Officials closed Highway 119, which runs
through Boulder Canyon, and some smaller roads to the north.
Commander Brough said the fire was growing, with part of it moving
westward and part of it moving to the northeast. Additional
firefighting resources, including two air tankers, were put on standby.
Windy conditions, with gusts of up to 72.4km/h, were helping the fire
to grow and making containment difficult for firefighters.
Gold Hill is about 22.5km northeast of Boulder.
