JAKARTA, Indonesia -- A strong earthquake has hit waters off
western Indonesia, but there were no immediate reports of injuries
or damage.
The U.S. Geological Survey said Wednesday night's quake had a
preliminary magnitude of 6.1.
It struck off Simeulue, an island Sumatra's western coast, at a
depth of 17 miles (27 kilometers).
Indonesia is located on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of
volcanos and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.
