Clash Leaves 8 Police, 2 Militants Dead in Afghanistan

Two Taliban militants and Eight policemen were killed as Taliban militants raided a police checkpoint in the relatively peaceful Badakhshan province 315 km northeast of capital Kabul on Tuesday, spokesman for provincial administration said Wednesday.
"A group of Taliban insurgents attacked a police checkpoint in Ghania village of Wardoj district last night and police returned fire as a result that eight policemen were martyred and two Taliban rebels were killed in the firefight lasted for a while," Abdul Marouf Rasikh told Xinhua.
Meantime, Zabihullah Mujahid who claims to speak for the Taliban outfit in talks with media via telephone from unknown location accepted responsibility, insisting over two dozen police were killed in the offensive.
Taliban militants fighting Afghan and NATO-led troops have intensified their activities since launching spring offensive code named "Al-Farooq" early this month.
