Two Earthquakes Hit Off California Coast

By Mark Dunphy - Sat Jun 18, 12:38 pm

Two  earthquakes struck off the northern coast of California early Saturday, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

The strongest quake, magnitude 4.8, was measured at a depth of 10.1km and was located 216 km (134 miles) west  of Brookings, Oregon, and 222 km (137 miles) west of Crescent City, California.  The quake struck at 2.49am local time or 11.49 a.m. (GMT).

It was preceded just eight minutes earlier by an earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter Scale. The first quake struck 204 km (126 miles) westsouthwest from Gold Beach, Oregon.

Much of California is located along the San Andreas Fault, the sliding boundary between the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate. It slices California in two from Cape Mendocino to the Mexican border. San Diego, Los Angeles and Big Sur are on the Pacific Plate. San Francisco, Sacramento and the Sierra Nevada are situated on the North American Plate.
