New Series of Serious Earthquakes Rattle South Pacific*
Sunday, October 25, 2009
A series of tremors has again hit some South Pacific Islands in the past
few days.
Early this morning a 5.1 magnitude quake hit the Solomon Islands region.
In Samoa a 4.9 magnitude quake late last night at a depth of ten kilometers.
In Tonga a 4.8 magnitude earthquake struck at a depth of 10 kilometers
on Friday afternoon.
And a 4.6 magnitude quake occurred to the South of Fiji on Friday afternoon.
For the past week – Vanuatu has also been subject to a number of tremors
– but not enough to trigger any alert. Seismic activity has been
increasing lately.
Meanwhile - an earthquake has struck near Indonesia's east, briefly
triggering a tsunami alert, and rattling Darwin 700 kilometres away.
The quake was 140 kilometres deep in the Banda sea and the US Geological
Survey recorded it as a magnitude 7.
There are currently no reports of casualties or damage.
