Australia: Dengue fever outbreak starts to rage in cyclone hit regions

AUTHORITIES are warning of a dengue fever outbreak in cyclone-devastated north Queensland as an influx of volunteers and workers arrive to help communities recover.

A Queensland Health spokesman has emphasised the outbreak had not been caused by Yasi, given the time it takes for the mosquito-borne virus to incubate.

He told AAP there were 33 cases in Townsville, with another test result pending.

Thirty-one of those had been around since July 2010 and the other two were declared on Monday.

Cassowary Coast Regional Council Deputy Mayor Mark Nolan told AAP there were 15 confirmed dengue cases in east Innisfail.

"Eight of these are in hospital," Mr Nolan said.

"So far they are all locals but because there is an influx of volunteers and other agencies in the area helping with the recovery we fear it may spread."

There are four types of dengue viruses.

Mr Nolan said there were 10 type two dengue cases and five type four cases at Innisfail.

A person infected with one type of the virus would not be immune to another type.

If they contract more than one type they are at risk of developing severe symptoms.

Symptoms range from a sudden onset of fever, intense headaches, muscle and joint pain and in severe cases haemorrhagic fever.

The virus is transmitted to humans from the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

It can be prevented by making sure there was no stagnant water lying around and by taking personal precautions to prevent mosquito bites, such as wearing long pants and long-sleeved shirts and using insect repellent.
