Strong Earthquake Jolts Northern Chile
SANTIAGO, CHILE, April 2 (BERNAMA-NNN- PRENSA LATINA) - A strong
earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale jolted the northern
Antofagasta region on Sunday, the Seismological Service of the
University of Chile reports.
The quake took place at 04:31 local time (03:31 GMT) with
epicentre at 75 kilometres southwest of the town of Calama and
93.8 kilometres deep.
The National Emergency Office says there are no immediate reports
of casualties or damage resulting from the earthquake.
Chile is located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone of high
seismic activity due to the tectonic clash between South American
and Nazca plates, and the subduction of Nazca plate under the
continental plate.
Experts estimate that at any time a cataclysm can occur anywhere
on the Chilean national territory.
However, they point north of the country as the most propitious
region at this time because it has been accumulating energy.
