Severe Wind and Rain Storms Continue to Lash UK

(UKPA) – 1 hour ago

Heavy rain and winds have been lashing Britain as new storms swept across the country.

A deep depression came in from the Atlantic overnight, bringing gales and wet weather in its wake.

It was warned wind speeds could reach up to 80mph in the north of England and up to 70mph in the south.

The stormy weather was centred over Scotland, but areas north of the border will escape the worst of the winds because it is "in the eye of the storm", forecasters said.

The winds will batter the UK throughout Thursday before moving out to the North Sea. Some snow was forecast to fall in the Scottish Highlands, but will be swept away by rain throughout the day.

The Highways Agency urged drivers across the North West of England to check conditions before they travel, with a forecast of gales, especially in Cumbria and Lancashire.

The organisation issued its first amber alert of the autumn with the possibility of gusts of more than 60mph between 4pm on Thursday and 8am Friday.

The alert advises motorcyclists, drivers of high-sided vehicles and people towing caravans and trailers to consider avoiding travel in areas where strong cross-winds are possible.

Regional operations manager John McTaggart said: "We do have a forecast of stronger gusts this evening and into the morning and we are advising all drivers to check conditions before they travel and to heed warnings and drive to conditions if they do venture out on to the motorway network.

"Drivers should allow extra time for journeys and take particular care in exposed and raised areas such as bridges by slowing down and leaving extra room for braking."
