Six earthquakes have been registered in Southwest Bulgaria
overnight.
Two minor earthquakes have been registered in the district of
Petrich (Southwest Bulgaria) overnight, the European Mediterranean
Seismological Centre reports.
The first jolt occurred at 00:25 a.m. and was of magnitude 2.5 on
the Richter Scale, while the second – at 01.10 a.m. with magnitude
2 on the Richter Scale.
At 12:39 p.m. a 3-magnitude tremor was recorded 10 km northwest of
the Bulgarian town of Petrich.
At 12:43 p.m. a 2-magnitude quake occurred 15 km northwest of the
town of Petrich and 97 km north of the Greek city of Thessaloniki.
The tremor was at a depth of 1 km.
A 3,3-magnitude earthquake was registered in Southwestern Bulgaria
at 6:22 p.m. Its epicenter was 9 km southwest of the Bulgarian
town of Sandanski and 98 km north of the Greek city of
Thessaloniki. The tremor occurred at a depth of 1 km.
The tremor was felt in the southwestern town of Petrich and the
villages of Karnalovo, Parvomay and Mikrevo. It occurred at a
depth of 10-15 km.
According to seismologists this is not an aftershock of the
3,1-magnitude quake recorded earlier today, but they expect
aftershocks from now on.
The Bulgarian region where today’s quakes were registered is
seismic, National Institute for Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography
at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences told FOCUS News Agency.
According to experts the entire Balkan region is highly seismic.
The depth of today’s quakes was about 10-15 km, which classifies
them as shallow. However, it is difficult to say the exact depth,
say experts.
Shallow quakes usually cause more damages, but it is hard to say
whether they are more dangerous, seismologists add.
